Letters deal with personal, family matters, speaking engagements, invitations, introductions and recommendations, local church affairs, comments on politics, suffrage, prohibition, some religious matters; a few miscellaneous mss.; 36 autograph cards and notes; six portraits and notes; six portraits and other miscellaneous material (some printed); one letter by his sister Emily Hale and one by his son, E. E. Hale, Jr.; most written from Boston, Roxbury, Mantunuck, R.I. or Washington, D.C.
